Discover one of Europe's most scenic Mediterranean road trips, travelling from Vlora to Saranda through the mountains, beaches and villages of the Albanian Riviera.

For travellers with a rental car, this journey should not be treated simply as the fastest way to travel between Vlora and Saranda.

Smaller villages like this are part of what makes travelling by car so valuable.
You are not limited to the major resorts.
Himara is one of the strongest bases for exploring the central Riviera.
From here, travellers can combine beaches, restaurants, nearby villages and coastal attractions without changing accommodation every day.
Consider staying two nights if your itinerary allows it.
South of Himara lies Porto Palermo.
Its bay, coastline and historic fortress make it one of the most visually distinctive stops along the route.

Continue south through the Riviera toward Lukova and Saranda.
This final section provides additional coastal scenery before the landscape becomes increasingly urban around Saranda.
Saranda marks the southern end of this particular Riviera road trip.
But the journey does not have to finish here.
From Saranda you can easily continue towards:
Gjirokastër.
This makes Saranda an excellent base for several additional days.
Possible, but not recommended if you actually want to explore the Riviera.
You will spend too much time driving.
Better, but still relatively fast.
Excellent for most visitors.

Day 3 — Himara → Porto Palermo → Borsh
Day 4 — Borsh → Saranda.
Ideal for travellers wanting several beach days and a relaxed itinerary.
Late spring, summer and early autumn are particularly popular.
July and August are busiest.
During peak season:
allow more time for parking.
May, June and September can be excellent months for travellers prioritising road trips rather than nightlife.
A normal well-maintained vehicle is sufficient for many of the principal Riviera routes.
An SUV is not automatically required simply because the road passes through mountains.
