This route is ideal for first-time visitors wanting to combine Albania's cultural heritage with the southern coastline.
Berat is one of Albania's most recognised historic destinations.
Its historic neighbourhoods climb the hills around the Osum River and create the famous appearance that has given Berat its association with the "city of a thousand windows".

Continue south toward Gjirokastër.

During summer, going earlier can help avoid the hottest part of the day.
Travellers who care more about coastal scenery can instead drive:
